‘Sarasa’ is the Japanese word for calico, a richly painted and printed fabric originally from India. From the mid-14^th to late-16^th centuries, Japan imported all their calico, or sarasa, from India. It was highly prized among the wealthy samurai and merchant classes. As Japan developed their own textile printing and dyeing techniques, workshops all over the country began imitating the exotic fabrics.
